There's an awesome event coming up in Kanazawa that I wanted to give everyone a heads up about. I'm really psyched about this.
OOIOO (pronounced oh-oh-eye-oh-oh) is an all-girl experimental rock group formed by a member of Osaka's legendary noise rock group, Boredoms. OOIOO are an essential part of the "new weird Japan" music scene that emerged in the 90s, and a key figure in Japan's unique and engaging underground music scene. Recently, they released a new album which is getting good reviews from fans as well as major music publications such as Pitchfork. Apart from playing overseas and a few scattered festival, OOIOO is the kind of band that usually only plays in Tokyo and Osaka. This is a very special opportunity to show support for more big acts coming to Kanazawa.
Also, for those of you who are friends with Atsushi from World Eclectic, his band is opening. There will be DJ sets between bands. Also, kappa, located next to the World Eclectic, currently carries a line of clothing designed by OOIOO's founding member, Yoshimi P-We.
Here's some more info on the band, but I suggest checking them out YouTube or Myspace for a better idea.http://www.myspace.com/oooiooo
According to allmusic's Kieran McCarthy "It's next to impossible to describe their sound, because — by design — it rarely follows consistent patterns". Some of their music has been described as having "a majestic ebb and flow that suggests natural wonders" or a "witchy, tribal side". Either way, at any one time it may incorporate chanting and punchy drums, dancey polyrhythms atonal composition or psychedelia.
From OOIOO's official website:
Yoshimi found a girls band OOIOO in 1995. OOIOO has it's own personality. It's music has been changing into different color even it's own music breath and regenerate itself. You can not find the balance of their music any where else. One and only existance.
